lol, I liked it how the first image they show makes you go, "Well, where is it?" Then you notice that there's more images and it finally zooms in onto the rectangular shape.. It's amazing how someone would have caught that.

Interesting read, thanks.

I've never believed in Atlantis but this looks promising.

I'll have to keep an eye on digg or something for updates.

Wow, thanks for sharing that article. Whether it's Atlantis or not that's a fascinating discovery.

Google Quashes Atlantis Buzz

Alas, the Atlantis discovery was not meant to be. Google quashed the idea a day later in a statement, "what users are seeing is an artifact of the data collection process," Google said. "Bathymetric (or seafloor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the seafloor. The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data."

Google Earth has been responsible for several amazing discoveries in the past as the company pointed out: "It's true that many amazing discoveries have been made in Google Earth -- a pristine forest in Mozambique that is home to previously unknown species, a fringing coral reef off the coast of Australia, and the remains of an Ancient Roman villa, to name just a few." Unfortunately, Atlantis will not be added to this list.

They didn't squash the theory. Google cannot explain the blank spots in between the lines. Other sonar distortion features lines that don't stop in perfect rectangles etc, but this image features that.

In addition... Plato (ancient philosopher) stated that Atlantis was located around 650 miles off the coast of Africa, past the Canary Islands. Guess what? The image is exactly 620 miles from the coast, and it is past the Canary Islands to the north slightly.

In addition, notice the faulting... earthquakes are caused by that type of faulting.

It's all a government coverup, that's where they buried hoffa, I know it.

But no, on a more serious note, I've always been rather neutral on the existence of atlantis, If it gets discovered, that's great, if it doesn't get discovered, that's great. But as for if it does get discovered, I'm not anticipating them to be nearly as advanced as people believed them to be.

And if it is found America will invade, France'll follow because it wants to grow up to be just like America and the UK'll follow because our goverment feels the need to jump at America's every whim, which'll force the rest of the UN to follow. Anyone else see a trend? God, we suck. =p
I'm not cynical, I'm honest. Anyway, it'd be pretty cool if it did exist, but, I'm still sceptical.

Good chance it could be an old city of some description. Just remember most the earth was under water at one point. Venice for example will be under water soon enough. Not in our life time, but it will succumb to the elements eventually.

World heritage will air lift all of Venice to somewhere else before they let it sink. They've stabilized it very well now, and conservation work goes apace. I don't think we will ever have a danger of Venice being completely submerged. Flooding is a problem that occurs every year, but it is a problem they've learned to live with. It's a naturally occuring problem when your city lives directly on the water; even a slight rise in water levels causes flooding. It is a problem architectural conservators are currently looking into.
